Mr. Aldene Nelson “Al” Hawks, Sr., 86, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday night, January 11, 2015, at Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. Mr. Hawks was born March 14, 1928, in Surry County, the son of the late Rupert Nelson and Hazel Gardner Hawks. Al retired as store manager from JCPenney after 40 years of service. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Aldene Nelson “Al” Hawks, Jr. and Rhonda Hawks of High Point; three grandchildren, Stephanie Hale, Matthew Hawks, and Melissa Hawks; three stepgrandchildren, Megan Braica, Morgan Braica, and Chad Braica; three brothers and sisters-in-law, William A. and Jennie Hawks of Burlington, Eddie Charles and Marcia Hawks of Fort Myers, FL, and Rupert and Carol Hawks of Deland, FL; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawks was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Burnell Robertson Hawks; and a brother, Robert Lee Hawks. The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 15, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Barry Osborne officiating. Interment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
