Alfred Smith Holcomb, Sr

Mr. Alfred Smith Holcomb, Sr., 77, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 13, 2014, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. Mr. Holcomb was born November 28, 1936, in Surry County, the son of the late Hugh Lindsay Holcomb, Sr. and Helen Smith Holcomb. Mr. Holcomb retired from Pine State Knitwear, where he and his brother were co-owners and he served as executive vice-president. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having attained the rank of lieutenant and served in the Far East for two years. Mr. Holcomb was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Dolly Casagrande Holcomb of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Buffy and Steve Fussell of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Bucky and Kim Holcomb of Mount Airy; his grandchildren, Chip Fussell and his wife, Jenn, Drew Fussell and his wife, Kellye, Bryce Holcomb, Blair Holcomb, and Elise Holcomb; his great-grandchildren, Graylyn Fussell and Trey Fussell; two stepdaughters, Marita Greene and her husband, Terry, of Las Vegas, NV, Roberta Bebout and her husband, Rick, of Gainesville, FL; two stepgrandchildren, Carly Holt and Joshua Ward; and a brother and sister-in-law, Lindsay Holcomb, Jr. and Barbara Holcomb of Mount Airy. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 3:00 PM at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Pyatt and Dr. Julian M. Aldridge, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The Holcomb family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:00 until 3:00 PM in the Ladies' Parlor of Central United Methodist Church.
