Alice Lawson Shough

Mrs. Alice Lawson Shough, age 93 of Stuart, Virginia passed away peacefully at Stuart Community Hospital on Monday, September 21, 2026. She was born Patrick County on August 21, 1933, to the late James Cleveland Lawson and Catherine Lewis Lawson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray Noel Shough; six siblings, Henry Lawson, Jessie Lawson, Elmer Lawson, Amos Lawson, Nellie L. Foley, and Mary L. White. Alice was a faithful and devoted member of New Hope Church of the Brethren, where her love for God and her faith were an important parts of her life. She retired from Bassett Furniture after many years of dedicated and hardworking service.

Alice was the true definition of a Southern lady—gracious, kind, hardworking, and trustworthy. She had a gentle spirit and a heart full of love for her family and those around her. She found joy in the simple things in life, especially tending to her garden and filling her home with the wonderful aroma of something she had lovingly baked.

Her faith was strong, her family was her greatest treasure, and she gave of herself freely to those she loved. Alice leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion, kindness, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed, but her love and the beautiful life she shared with her family will never be forgotten.

Left to cherish the memories of Mrs. Shough are her devoted husband, James C. Ferguson; grandson, Seth Ferguson; one brother, Edd Lawson; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral for Mrs. Shough will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026, at New Hope Church of the Brethren at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Rick Randall officiating. Burial will follow in the Lawson Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday morning.
