Mr. Alvin Roy Lawson, 88, of 529 Bob Jessup Road, Mount Airy, passed away early Friday morning, March 27, 2015, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Lawson was born October 13, 1926, in Stokes County, the son of the late Roy and Lelia Hill Lawson. Alvin proudly served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a longtime tobacco farmer and a member, deacon, and Sunday school teacher at Albion Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Gay and Russ Riggan of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth W. and Molly Lawson of Elkin; his grandchildren, Jonathan Lawson, Daniel and Sara Lawson, Matthew and Danielle Riggan, Leah Riggan, Amanda and Vernon Tackett, and Andrew Lawson; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Jewel Gray of Stuart, VA; many nieces and nephews; and a special canine companion, George. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara George Lawson; a son, Michael Gray "Mike" Lawson; a granddaughter, Kimberly Chambers; two sisters, Inez Stewart and Clara Mills; and a brother, Elbert Lee Lawson. The funeral service will be held Sunday, March 29, 2015, at 3:00 PM at Albion Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rickey Rogers and the Rev. Odell Sisk officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. The family may also be contacted at the home of Gay and Russ Riggan, 2693 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Bayada Home Health Care, the 6th Floor Cardiac Staff at Forsyth Medical Center, and three very special nursing assistants, Revida Moore, Heather Carroll, and Jessica Whitt.
