Mrs. Barbara Jean King Houchins, age 78 of Stuart, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born in Patrick County on April 3, 1948, to the late Richard King and Mary Pilson King. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Houchins was preceded in death by her husband, George Houchins, III; a son, George Houchins, IV; and a sister, Darlene Martin. She was a member of First Christian Church in Stuart. She loved to fish and watch NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt, Sr., with her husband, George. She adored her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild, and was known as “Nanny” by all. She especially enjoyed going riding and going shopping at Walmart with Erica.
Mrs. Houchins is survived by a daughter, Greta H. Payne; two sons, James D. Houchins (Donita) and Jeffery D. Houchins (Tracey); eight grandchildren, Michael Houchins (Maggie), Jason Payne (Krista Lawson), Tony Helms (Grace), Britany Lester, James D. Houchins, II, Jennifer Foley and Kelsey Paige Houchins; ten great-grandchildren, Bri’Anna Cannoy, Lyric Houchins, Kingston Payne, Kinsley Payne, Eli Lester, Wheeler Helms, Ethan Lester, Milayna Helms, Myles Roberts and Journey Robert s; a great-great-grandchild, Armani Lynn Turner; four brothers, Junior King (Lillian), Larry King, Benny King and Lawrence King; a sister, Shirley Hodge (Darwin); a host of nieces and nephews; and a special niece and caregiver, Erica Turner.
A homegoing service for Mrs. Houchins will be held Sunday, July 26, 2026 at 6:30 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. James Houchins officiating. A wake will be held an hour prior to the time of the service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church, P.O.
