Barbara Bernice Hiatt Nester

Mrs. Barbara Bernice Hiatt Nester, age 94, of Mt. Airy, passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023, at her home.  She was born on July 21, 1928, in Carroll County, Virginia to the late Thomas Raleigh and Exie Inscore Hiatt.  Barbara cared about her family above all else. Countless memories are shared among her large family, gathering on Christmas Eve morning to have a big country breakfast with warm biscuits that she had been making since 4:30 that morning. She was generous, and had a kind and quiet spirit. She provided endless love, care, and support for her family. She was never one to complain and had a gracious and forgiving spirit. Her strong, kind-hearted, and selfless nature will be missed by her family and community alike. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will surely be missed by all who knew her.  Left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses, Dallas Nester (Lynne), Jo Ann Mears (Jerry) Janet Nester, Marty Nester (Jenua), Jacqueline Nester; grandchildren, Keith, Kerry, Kelly, Jason, and Jarrett Nester, Jamie Putnam, Jodi Tolbert, Jana Saur, Dusty, Dane, and Jesse Nester, Lindsey Joyce; twenty-two great-grandchildren; sisters, Ivalene Chaffin, Faye Randall, Gloria Payne; brothers, Otto Hiatt.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nester was preceded in death by her husband, Hoover Martin Nester; daughter, Joy Kay Nester; sisters, Audrey Wright, Wanda Hiatt, Geraldine Deal, Dare Hiatt; brothers, Quenten, Bernard, and Reid Hiatt.  A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Unity Church Cemetery with service conducted by Rev. Buford Jessup.  The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the time for the service at the church.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made in honor of Mrs. Nester to the Unity Church Cemetery Fund 2874 Unity Church Rd, Ararat, VA 24053.
