Mr. Bernie Walter Vaughn, 86, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday morning, December 17, 2014. Mr. Vaughn was born September 3, 1928, in Surry County, one of nine children born to the late Zebulon Vance and Ella Mae Robertson Vaughn. He was retired from Vaughn's Shoe Shop, having been the third generation to carry on this trade that was started by his grandfather, John Zebulon Vaughn. Bernie was a loving, devoted husband, who enjoyed his beautiful home where he had lived for 68 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy, where he had served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and in other capacities. Bernie loved sports and coached a Y.M.C.A. women's independent softball team, winning championships for 9 years. He also enjoyed being a part of the Vaughn Brothers' Quartet. Bernie was a kind, gentle man who provided a loving example of our Heavenly Father. His motto was "treat everybody the same." He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda Bondurant Vaughn of the home; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Haywood and Anne Vaughn and Donald and Loretta Vaughn, all of Mount Airy; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Vaughn was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Vaughn Frye; three brothers, Herschel Vaughn, Arvil Vaughn, and Lester Vaughn; and infant brothers, Carl and Carlie Vaughn. The funeral service will be held Friday, December 19, 2014, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex L. Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by his special caregivers, Melrose Reynolds, Jeff Draughon, and Beth Bennett. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
