Betty Baker Cooper

Mrs. Betty Baker Cooper, 85, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday afternoon, September 17, 2014, at her home. Mrs. Cooper was born September 14, 1929, in Mullins, SC, the daughter of the late Herbert Maxie and Thelma Bruce Baker. She is survived by two daughters, Becky (Skipper) Shaffer of Mooresville and Beverly (Billy) Holbrook of Goshen, KY; a son, Bobby (Carlene Daniels, fiancée) Cooper of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren, Michael (Wendy) Pedraza, Katherine (Michael) Dickerson, Ken Cooper, Craig Cooper, Katie Cooper, Emily (Chris Reid, fiancé) Holbrook, Alex Holbrook, and Hope Holbrook; four great-grandchildren, Mia Pedraza, Millie Pedraza, Cylan Cooper, and Luke Dickerson; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Herbert Maxie Baker, Jr.; two special cousins, Gary and Billie V. Drinnen; a family friend, Lucy Ellen Gwyn; and a godchild, Leigh Johnson. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her husband, William Howe "Bill" Cooper; a son, William Howe "Billy" Cooper, Jr.; a brother, Herbert Maxie Baker, Jr.; and a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Cooper. Mrs. Cooper graduated from Mullins High School in South Carolina and Winthrop University. She was a classroom teacher in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and Mount Airy City Schools. A lifelong Methodist, she was an active member of Central United Methodist Church and a member of Mount Airy Chapter 18, Order of the Eastern Star. The family will receive friends Friday, September 19, 2014, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. A service of worship and celebration of Mrs. Cooper's life will be held Saturday, September 20, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James L. Pyatt officiating. Interment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 1909 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407-2145.
