Mrs. Betty Sue Blackburn Hutchens, 80, of 456 Clover Lane, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday night, April 2, 2015, at Golden Living Center. Mrs. Hutchens was born January 7, 1935, in Watauga County, to the late Earl and Susan Swift Blackburn. Betty was reared at Mills Home in Thomasville. As a sports enthusiast, she played basketball while at the orphanage and also during her high school years. She also continued her basketball career at Appalachian State University. Betty furthered her education later in life. She was among the first nursing graduates from Surry Community College. She spent countless hours volunteering, serving with the Dobson Rescue Squad and as a foster parent. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Rachel Hutchens of Mount Airy and Mark and Vicky Hutchens of Surfside Beach, SC; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Frances and John Pendill of Manteo; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Peggy Blackburn of Raleigh; a half-sister, Lois Blackburn of Boone; and a half-brother, Roy Blackburn of Boone. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hutchens was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Houston Hutchens; a grandson, Bo Hutchens; a sister, Peggy Craven; and two brothers, Gene Blackburn and David Blackburn. A graveside service will be held Monday, April 6, 2015, at 11:00 AM at Skyline Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Trent Lyons officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, and other times at the home of Mike and Rachel Hutchens, 1479 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361-0338.
