Brent Shelton Hull

Mr. Brent Shelton Hull, 62, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on New Year’s Day, 2024, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, after a courageous battle with cancer.  Mr. Hull was born September 2, 1961, in Surry County, one of four children born to Howard William Hull, Sr. and the late Betty Jean Nowlin Hull.  Brent grew up in the Red Brush and Pine Ridge communities.  After graduating from North Surry High School in 1979, he earned his associate degree from Guilford Technical Community College.  In a word, Brent was curious, and his inquisitiveness and keen intellect drove all his pursuits.  He spent his life working at Hull Brothers Lumber Company, a well-established, family-owned business.  His spiritual journey was solid.  As a young person, he made a profession of Christian faith and was active in the local church.  With a servant’s heart, he served as a member and deacon at Calvary Baptist Church.  He was generous, loyal, and a brave man.  He will be remembered for all the heart he shared with his friends, family, and former softball players.  He truly loved each of them – and if you knew him, you knew it.  Brent was an avid gardener and will be remembered for sharing his many homegrown fruits and vegetables with his family, friends, neighbors, and especially the widows and widowers in his church family.  Brent also shared his gifts and talents through his membership with the Round Peak Masonic Lodge #616 AF and AM.  One could also say Brent loved old cars, trucks, and tractors, as his collection was plentiful.  In all, he was a selfless man whose passing left an unfillable gap in the hearts of his loved ones.  His ability to sacrifice, provide, support, forgive, and love will be forever engrained in all he knew.  He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Anita Lawrence Hull; three daughters, Danielle Hull and her fiancé, Jesse Wright, Megan Hull, and Rachel Holderfield and her husband, Bailey; four grandchildren, Derek Hull, Case Brent Sechrist, Della Hull, and Samson Holderfield; his father, Howard William Hull, Sr.; a sister and brother-in-law, LaDonna and Danny Sheaffer; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Cathy Hull and Chad and Janet Hull; a special cousin, Gail Hiatt; a godson, Kirby Cooke; and a bonus sister, LuAnn Boyer.  A service of worship and celebration of Brent’s life will be held Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex L. Martin and the Rev. Trent Lyons officiating.  Burial will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, with full Masonic rites conducted by the Round Peak Masonic Lodge #616 AF and AM.  The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church.  The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love, compassion, and care shown by the staff at Novant Health.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC  27030; or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN  38105.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
