Carroll Gray Lawson

Mr. Carroll Gray Lawson, 73, of Cana, VA, passed away Tuesday morning, February 18, 2025, at his home. Mr. Lawson was born May 1, 1951, in Surry County, one of three children born to the late Brockley William Lawson and Forrest Lucille Stone Lawson Childress. Carroll grew up in the Toast community and graduated from North Surry High School in 1969. For over 40 years, Carroll was a fixture of the trucking community. Whether hauling petroleum or sharing stories at the truck stop, he always had a smile to offer or a piece of wisdom to share. One of his most famous sayings was “I’ve got a million miles behind me. I’m not lost.” This quote perfectly encapsulated his philosophy on life – simple, steady, and at peace with where he was. He found joy in the small things: a quiet sunrise, a hot cup of coffee, and the rhythm of the road beneath his wheels. Though he drove for miles, it was the people he met along the way who truly shaped his journey. For many years, Carroll was a familiar face at Flat Ridge Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gail McMillian Lawson; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jody Boyd; a son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Julie Lawson; five grandchildren, Erin Boyd, Josh Boyd, Laken Lawson, Mila Lawson, and Violet Lawson; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Joe Moore; a brother and sister-in-law, Craig and Pat Lawson; several nieces and nephews; and an adopted grandson, Mason Gormish. A graveside service will be held Monday, February 24, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Flat Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Dennis Bledsoe officiating. No formal visitation will be held. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Flat Ridge Baptist Church, 2167 Epworth Road, Cana, VA 24317. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
