It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Edward Hill, a devoted husband, dedicated professional, and beloved member of his family and community. He passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, December 7, 2025, at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, at the age of 81.
Mr. Hill was born on January 23, 1944, in Forsyth County, one of five children born to the late Dewey William and Grace Iola Bryant Hill. Charles proudly served in the United States Army as a Sergeant First Class, stationed in Germany, where he exemplified leadership and deep commitment to his country. Ever proud of his service, he was seldom seen without his cherished Army cap.
Following his military service, Charles began a long and successful career at Quality Mills, later known as Cross Creek Apparel and Russell Corporation, where he worked as an industrial engineer for an impressive 39 years. His passion for engineering began early, earning a degree from Gaston Tech in 1964 and working as a mechanic before being called to service. Upon returning home, he continued his career at Quality Mills, where his talents and dedication were highly valued. It was there that he met the love of his life, Barbara. He retired after a long and rewarding tenure, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and innovation.
Faith was the cornerstone of Charles’ life. He was the beloved grandson of a Methodist minister and a devoted and longtime member of First Baptist Church of Mount Airy. His involvement in the church was deep and meaningful, serving as a deacon, co-chair of the house and grounds committee, and a dedicated member of both the finance committee and church council. He was always ready to repair, maintain, and nurture the church, cherishing his time as a member of the King David Sunday School class. His commitment to the church community was tireless and heartfelt.
Charles’ spirit of service extended into the wider community as well. He served as treasurer of the Franklin Ruritan Club, actively supported the Franklin Youth Foundation, and made a lasting impact as a Little League baseball coach. He not only taught the fundamentals of the game but also demonstrated true mentorship, often driving kids to and from practices and fostering a sense of teamwork. A proud Yokefellow, he was always ready to lend a helping hand wherever one was needed.
Gifted with a natural talent for fixing anything, Charles was known for his keen mind, sharp wit, and sense of humor, which remained with him up to his final days. His meticulous record-keeping was highly regarded among his friends, family, and medical staff alike. In his spare time, he found joy in working on cars, rebuilding engines and anything else he could do under the hood. He especially loved old classics.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, remembered for his laughter, skillful hands, and the love he shared with those around him.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Speight Hill; a daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Sam Critz; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Rhonda Hill and Darron and Nicole Hill; three grandchildren, Ryan Critz and his wife, Lena, Austin Critz, and Brady Hill; two stepgrandchildren, Dustin Oakley and Blake Oakley and his wife, Courtney; two great-grandchildren, Liam Oakley and Jemma Critz; and two brothers, Donald L. Hill and Kenneth W. Hill.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hill was preceded in death by two infant sisters, Elizabeth Ann Hill and Viola Mae Hill; and two sisters-in-law.
A service of worship and celebration of Charles’ life will be held Friday, December 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Jay Meadows and Dr. Roger B. Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in the Ararat Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
