Charlie “Maynard” Lovell, 85, of Woolwine, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2026, with his loving family by his side and his extended family and closest friends supporting him through prayer and love. Maynard was born on September 2, 1940, to the late Frederick Isham Lovell and Dade Martha Jane Rorrer Lovell.
A proud veteran, Maynard served his country in the United States Army from October 1963 to October 1965. During his two years of military service, he kept things running smoothly while working in the motor pool. He also trained extensively on small arms repair and utilized those skills to repair tank guns. His time in the service deeply shaped his strong work ethic and left him with stories he proudly carried for the rest of his life.
Following his honorable discharge, Maynard held a few public jobs before finding his true professional passion in exhaust work. He became the proud owner and operator of Lovell’s Custom Exhaust, where everyone throughout the region knew to see Maynard for their custom work.
This profession naturally grew his lifelong passion for cars. Maynard truly loved life, horse power, and hot rods. He enjoyed all kinds of racing, with drag racing always being his absolute favorite. Even after his retirement, Maynard could always be found attending drag races, cruising around with his friends on Sundays, and hanging out at local cruise-ins. He possessed incredible skills when it came to cars, and his garage doors were always wide open to help anyone work on their classic hot rods. Outside of the garage, his other hobbies included raising black and tan coon dogs and taking them out hunting. He also had a sharp eye for value and deeply enjoyed the thrill of searching for a good deal.
Above all, Maynard loved being with his family. He cherished his time with them and successfully instilled his deep love for classic vehicles into several of his nephews.
He is survived by his two sisters, Helena Lovell Belcher (Albert) of Woolwine, Mildred Lovell Scott (Bobby) of Bassett and sister-in-law, Linda Boyd Lovell (Nash). He is survived by three nieces, five nephews, and an extended family of cousins, along with numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews who were blessed to know him. Maynard was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Nash Lovell, and his nephew, Dale Scott.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 24, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery (179 Sycamore Church Road, Stuart, VA). A graveside service will follow at 1:00 PM with Pastor Shaun Draughn officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to support his local community via the Woolwine Community Ruritan Club (P.O. Box 203, Woolwine, VA 24185) or the Woolwine Volunteer Fire Department (P.O. Box 38, Woolwine, VA 24185). Online condolences may be shared with the family by visiting moodyfuneralservices.com.
