Clinton “Bunky” Midkiff, was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, but spent most of his life in Newport News, Virginia. As a young man, he frequently visited his family in Mount Airy, North Carolina where he met the love of his life, Verna Jones Midkiff. They were married for 69 years and blessed with one daughter, Deborah Ann and lead a full and happy life together until Verna’s death in January 2023.
All who knew him well remember his as a very unique and fun-loving man. He was an avid outdoorsman and had many tall tales about his hunting and fishing experiences. He loved telling jokes and kidding around with everyone he met.
When friends and family came to town, he became the unofficial tour guide, sharing the rich history of Newport News, the shipyard, and Williamsburg area.
Bunky enjoyed yard sales, a great bargain, restoring antiques and building replicas of cabins and waterfalls. He was also a sketch artist and one of his works of Abraham Lincoln which he had hanging in his den.
In recent years, weather permitting, he would raise his garage door and while he tinkered with anything he could get his hands on, he would “hold court” for anyone stopping by, making sure he had plenty of cold water for them. He was special to say the least.
Our family would like to express our sincere gratitude to his friends in the neighborhood who extended helping hands to him and Debbie so many times. We would also like to thank the many employees of Costco for the friendship and help they gave him when help was needed.
Surviving is his nephew, Eugene Midkiff, Jr. and wife Joyce, nieces, Anita Rowe and husband Steve, Chris Robbins and husband Gary; his extended family. Mike Midkiff and wife Mary, Mike Midkiff, Jr. and wife Suzanne, and Mitch Midkiff and wife Tracy.
Mr. Midkiff was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Robert Midkiff and wife Henrietta Davis Midkiff; and a brother, Eugene Midkiff, Sr. and wife Thelma; extended family members, Cliff Midkiff and wife Violet, Trent Wood and wife Shelby.
No formal services will be held at this time. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy has been entrusted with the arrangements.
