Deputy Logan R. Utt, 31, made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting the community he loved on Friday, May 29, 2026. Though his watch has ended, his legacy of service, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication will endure forever.
Born on February 21, 1995, in Surry County, Logan was the son of Jessica Bates and David Utt. He was lovingly raised by his paternal grandparents, Vernon and Frances Utt, who instilled in him the values of faith, hard work, service, and compassion that would define his life.
Logan was known for his contagious smile, larger-than-life personality, and caring spirit. He never met a stranger and was always willing to give his time to help others. Whether offering a helping hand, sharing a laugh, or simply listening, Logan made everyone feel welcomed and valued.
A man of deep faith, Logan was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord and sought to live his life in service to others. He and his family were faithful members of Hope Community Church, where they found fellowship, encouragement, and opportunities to serve alongside their church family. His faith was evident in the way he treated others with kindness, compassion, humility, and a servant’s heart.
His commitment to serving others began while he was a student at Carroll County High School when he joined the Cana Volunteer Fire Department. He remained a proud and active member throughout his life. Following graduation, Logan answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. After completing his military service, he continued his dedication to public safety as a firefighter with the Mount Airy Fire Department for several years.
Alongside these accomplishments, Logan never lost sight of his lifelong dream of becoming a law enforcement officer in the community he called home. That dream became a reality in December of 2023, when he was sworn in as a Deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. From that day forward, he proudly served and protected the citizens of Carroll County with honor, courage, and integrity.
Above all else, Logan cherished his family. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Katlin “K.T.” Utt; his beloved children, Silas and Bertie, who were the pride and joy of his life; his grandmother, Frances “Nana” Utt; his brothers, Jess Edwards and Lee Edwards; and his sisters, Hassidy Capps and Sarah Blair (Matt).
He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Sheila and Jamie Mayes, Debbie and David Broyles, Andy and Kim Utt, and Van and Pam Utt; special cousins, Connor Mayes, Matt Broyles, Anthony and Tay Utt, Kelsea and Blake Coalson, Damien Utt, Madi Mayes and her significant other, Isaac Crotts, Logan’s best friend; seven special nieces and nephews, numerous beloved cousins, and friends.
He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Dianna Jones; his father-in-law and stepmother-in-law, Stanley and Angela Jones; and his sister-in-law, Courtney McBride and her husband, Josh.
Logan was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Vernon “Papa” Utt; his maternal grandmother, Hallie “Nanny” Bates; and his uncle, George “Pug” Utt, Jr.
A visitation will be held Thursday, June 4, 2026, from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at Temple Baptist Church, 3615 Rockford Street, Mount Airy.
The funeral service will be held Friday, June 5, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Temple Baptist Church, with Pastor Anthony Thomas officiating. A private interment will follow at the Utt Family Cemetery and will be attended by family members, close friends, members of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department, and members of the Mount Airy Fire Department.
In honoring Deputy Utt, we also honor the lasting impact he made on his department and community, a legacy of service, integrity, and compassion that will endure for generations.
