Donald Ray Vaughn

Mr. Donald Ray Vaughn, 84, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully at Northern Hospital of Surry County on Monday, April 13, 2015, one of nine children born to the late Zebulon Vance and Ella Mae Robertson Vaughn. He was retired from Vaughn's Shoe Shop, having been the third generation to carry on this trade that was started by his grandfather, John Zebulon Vaughn. Donald was a loving and Christian husband, looking tenderly after his wife Loretta, and helping to establish a good home. He really enjoyed being around others, extending his hospitality to all. Donald devoted his life to the enjoyment of music, having been a part of the Vaughn Brothers' Quartet. His tenor voice reflected high quality as he sang so beautifully "How Great Thou Art," "I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked," and his favorite "Because He Lives." He also enjoyed singing in the church choir. Other activities in his life included helping his late brother Bernie Walter Vaughn with the Y.M.C.A. women's independent softball team that won championships for nine years. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Loretta S. Vaughn, one brother and sister-in-law, Haywood and Anne Vaughn, a sister-in-law, Linda B. Vaughn, all of Mount Airy, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Vaughn was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Vaughn Frye, four brothers, Herschel Vaughn, Arvil Vaughn, Lester Vaughn, and Bernie Vaughn, and infant brothers Carl and Carlie Vaughn. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Alex Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The body will be available for viewing throughout the day on Wednesday April 15, 2015 at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 1:00 until 2:00 on Thursday, April 16, 2015. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by his special caregivers Jeff Draughon and Beth Bennett, and to the second floor staff at Northern Hospital. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Surry County Health and Nutrition Attn: CRC Grant Services, 1218 State St. Suite 200 Mt. Airy, NC. 27030
