Mrs. Doris Frances Hutchens Smith, 88, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday evening, December 24, 2025, at her home. Mrs. Smith was born May 9, 1937, in Surry County, one of fourteen children born to the late Thomas Jefferson and Bertie Francis Atkins Hutchens. Doris lived a simple and meaningful life and will be remembered as a loving wife and a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, and friend. She retired from Sara Lee after many years of dedicated service and was a member of Community Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Wanda Faye Creed; a son, Larry Odell Smith; three grandchildren, Misty Duggan (Adam), Holly Johnson (Brad), and McKinley York (Kaley); six great-grandchildren, Kaleb Duggan, Aydin Duggan, Logan Duggan, Harley Duggan, Arabella Johnson, and McKinley Wade York; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Pink Odell Smith; a son, Bruce Wayne Smith; a son-in-law, Leonard Toby Creed; four sisters, Pearlie Anna Jefferson, Ola Elizabeth Reece, Roxie Edna Hutchens, and Hattie Mae Brooks; and nine brothers, General Gilbert Hutchens, Lacy Nathaniel Hutchens, Lonnie James Hutchens, Grover Wesley Hutchins, Charles Monroe Hutchens, Roger Emery Hutchens, Thomas Jefferson “Tommie” Hutchens, Jr., Fred Walter Hutchens, and Samuel Jefferson Hutchens. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Skyline Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Travis Sechrist and the Rev. Sammy Lawson officiating. No formal visitation will be held. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the love and compassion shown by all of Mrs. Smith’s caregivers, especially the staff of Medi Home Health and Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Medi Home Health and Hospice, 403 South Main Street, Suite 101, Sparta, NC 28675; or Blues Grove Baptist Church, 3607 Red Brush Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
