Doris Mathis Timmons

Mrs. Doris Mathis Timmons, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, teacher and friend, passed away September 13, 2026.

Doris was born in Wilkes County on February 29, 1936 (leap year) to Carl and Agnes Mathis.

She met Bobby Timmons, the love of her life, at Wingate College, where they both attended. She completed her education at Appalachian State University with a degree in education.

After Bobby graduated from Elon, they married and moved to Mt. Airy. They were married for 69 years when Bobby passed. They built a beautiful life filled with family, friendships, love, and adventure.

Their life together was a true love story, and those who knew them saw the joy they had together and in the family they created.

Doris is survived by her 3 children, all of Mount Airy. Carla Kartanson, Cynthia Timmons, and Robby Timmons. She also leaves two cherished granddaughters, Heather Jones (Tyler) of Raleigh, NC, and Sarah McClellan (Jon) of Houston, Texas. Four great-granddaughters, Willa, Evie, Mary Beth and Sybil; and a great grandson, Jonathan.

Doris spent 30 years teaching elementary school, with the majority of those years at Flat Rock. Still, her greatest accomplishment and her greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother. Nothing brought her more happiness than her family. She treasured every moment she could spend with them.

Doris also knew how to enjoy life. Her favorite place was Saddle Ridge Campground camping with Bobby, friends and family. She also loved Myrtle Beach, sunbathing on the beach for hours. She enjoyed square dancing, good times and the simple pleasures of life. She especially loved a good snow fall when the snow was icy enough for sledding and school would be cancelled.

Then there was her coconut cake and fried chicken recipes and traditions that will forever be a part of memories she leaves behind.

Doris had a way of making people laugh, IYKYK! She was fun, funny, and full of life all the way up until her end.

Now, we like to imagine Bobby is waiting to see her Big Beautiful Smile, maybe they are reminiscing about their beautiful days they cherished on Saddle Mountain surrounded by the people they loved and sharing a funny story.

Somewhere beyond this life, Doris and Bobby are together again-just as they were meant to be.

Her life was a gift. Her laughter was a blessing. Her love is her legacy.

The family will receive friends Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 11:00 ~ 12:00 at Skyline in the Mausoleum, services will follow at 12:00 in the Mausoleum with Dr. Jon Cawley. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, 651 S. South Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Service of Mount Airy is entrusted with her arrangements.
