Mrs. Dorothy Ann Chilton Bateman, 83, of Mount Airy, widow of Kenneth Clenton Bateman, passed away Monday, May 9, 2011, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born January 26, 1928, in Surry County, to the late Elmer Burtis and Louella Smith Chilton. She was a homemaker and a member of Bannertown Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and John Gillespie and Jo Ann and Don Payne, all of Mount Airy, and Janet and Tommy Rice of High Point; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Maxine Simmons of White Plains and Mary Laura and Bob Stevens of Swansboro; and a brother and sister-in-law, Dalmer and Kathleen Chilton of Mount Airy. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Bateman was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Jimmie Simmons. The funeral service will be held Thursday, May 12, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Milton Sewell officiating. A private burial will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Smith Family Cemetery Fund, 195 Avondale Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
