Dorothy Eula Hamby Gwyn

Mrs. Dorothy Eula Hamby Gwyn, 85 of Mount Airy, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, April 22, 2026, at Atrium Health Lexington Medical Center with her loved ones by her side. She was born November 8, 1940, to the late Jess Rufus Hamby and Eula Elizabeth Owen Hamby. She and James where longtime members of Slate Mountain Baptist Church for many years. Nanny was the greatest wife, mom, Nanny, sister and friend ever. She loved to cook, garden with her flowers, and eat her orange creamsicle ice cream. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 70 years, James Marlon Gwyn of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Donnie Smith, Reta and Greg Nichols, Janice Harris and Luis Bautista, Marilyn and Chris McMillian, Sandra and Dannie Bowman, and Lynn Millard; 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; sisters, Veneta and Teddy Edwards, Della Long, and Cheryl Hopkins; brother, John Hamby; special brother-in-law, Junior Gwyn and wife Sylvia Gwyn; and many other family and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gwyn was preceded in death by two daughters, Rebecca Jane Gwyn and Cathy Wilmoth; and three brothers, James “Jim” Thomas Hamby, Rufus Charles “RC” Hamby, and Alton Rudolph Hamby. Graveside services will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Skyline Memory Gardens at 2:00pm with Rev. Chris McMillian and Rev. Barry O’Neal officiating. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home on Monday from 12:00 – 1:45pm. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
