Douglas Henry McMillian

April 30, 1945 — October 25, 2024

High Point, North Carolina

With deepest remorse, the family of Douglas Henry McMillian announces his death on October 25, 2024. Doug fell at his home in High Point on Saturday, October 19, sustaining a massive brain injury from which he did not recover. Born on April 30, 1945, he was the son of Henry and Frances Harrell McMillian. As a young boy, he enjoyed the usual "boyish" activities including setting rabbit gums, fishing, swimming, playing baseball, and being a big brother to four younger sisters. At age 20, Doug was drafted into the Marine Corps and served a 13-month tour of duty in Vietnam. Upon returning from overseas, he met and married Margaret Perez Salgado in September of 1967. They were married 56 years until her passing in March 2024. Together, they were Mom and Dad to two children as well as being Mema and EeAh to five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His early work years were spent managing several Winn-Dixie stores and being a "jack of all trades." Doug was proficient at carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, building and working on computers, tax accounting, car mechanics, coaching softball, gardening, cooking, and various other skills. He was quick to put these talents to use in helping his family, friends, and strangers. A recent highlight in his life was being a participant in the Triad Honor Flight #7b24. Each Sunday that his schedule permitted, he drove to his childhood home in Mt. Airy to visit the "McMillian clan" where all kinds of topics were discussed, and a home-cooked meal was shared by all in attendance. All said, there was no one quite like him. His final act of service to others was his wish to donate his body to science so that, even in death, he might help others. Rest well, Doug, and know that your legacy of love and devotion to family, friends, and country will be an inspiration to those who were fortunate enough to know you. Left to honor Doug's memory are a daughter, Katie (Louis) Walker; a son, Doug, Jr. (Riley) McMillian; grandchildren, Kailey Walker, Whitney (Michael) Early, William (Krista) Walker, Cayden McMillian, and Declan McMillian; great-grandchildren, Talen, Lane, Kennedy, and Sammy; and one great-grand dog, Letty; two sisters, Pat (Gary) Johnson and Linda McMillian; along with numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Salgado McMillian; his parents, Henry and Frances Harrell McMillian; a brother, Donald McMillian; two sisters, Juanita McMillian and Mary Smith; and an infant sister, Brenda McMillian. A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, November 2nd 2024 11:00AM-1:00PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to: Triad Honor Flight P.O. Box 8606 Greensboro, NC 27419 https://www.triadhonorflight.org
