Mr. Earl Ray Lowe, 66, of 201 Davis Road, Mount Airy, passed away early Tuesday morning, February 25, 2014, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Lowe was born October 16, 1947, in Surry County, the son of the late Samuel Decosta and Mildred Galyean Lowe. Ray served in the United States Army as a Private First Class with Company B, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade in the Republic of Vietnam. As a result of his bravery, he was decorated with a Purple Heart for wounds received in action. He worked at Proctor-Silex Inc. for many years and later retired as a self-employed painter. He is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pamela Robin Lowe Joyner and T.J. Joyner of Mount Airy and Teresa Lowe Smith and Jimmy Smith of Lowgap; a brother, Terry "Bones" Lowe of Mount Airy; three nieces, Amanda Smith, Stephanie Moncus Norman, and Tammy Hodges; and two nephews, Steve Moncus and Michael Moncus. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lowe was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Rose Lowe. The funeral service will be held Friday, February 28, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Joe Atkins and the Rev. Gray Kirkman officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Frank E. Walker, Sr.-Jr. Chapter 61, Disabled American Veterans, 767 West Lebanon Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
