Mr. Earnest Howard "Bud" Fleming, 86, of Cana, VA, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at his home. Mr. Fleming was born January 12, 1928, in Surry County, to the late James Monroe and Daisy Belle Mayberry Fleming. He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was a faithful and loving husband to his wonderful wife, Phyllis Ann Baum Fleming, for 60 years. He was a hardworking man, operating an apple orchard, and showing his talented skills in many ways. He continued to work as long as his health permitted. He is also survived by a daughter, Doris Phillips of Charlotte; two sons-in-law, Steve Phillips of Cana, VA, and Gary Turner of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Wesley Turner, Stephanie Phillips, and Anastasia Phillips; and two sisters, Gladys Dawson of Ararat, VA, and Nevvie Jean Brooks of Lynchburg, VA. In addition to his parents, Mr. Fleming was preceded in death by a daughter, Geneva Kay Turner; a sister, Ima Fleming; two brothers, Harmon and Doug Fleming; two half-sisters, Virginia Chandler and Florence Hiatt; three half-brothers, Glen, Jesse, and James Fleming. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 PM Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Mount Bethel Moravian Church, with the Rev. Charles Fishel and the Rev. Ray Fleming officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. The family would like to express their appreciation to a special niece and caregiver, Ann Mayes, and also Mountain Valley Hospice for the wonderful care Mr. Fleming was given during his illness. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mount Bethel Moravian Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Bonnie Ayers, 2119 Wards Gap Road, Cana, VA 24317. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
