Mr. Edward Lee Sparks, age 74, formerly of North Matewan West Virginia, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson NC, from a lingering illness. He is survived by his daughter, April Dawn Sparks of Matewan WV, Azsha Lee Sparks, and his former wife, Elain Sparks, of North Matewan.

He leaves behind 4 brothers, and 6 sisters. He was preceded in death by his father, John Ed Watkins; his mother, Mary Lou Dawson; and his grandmother, Missouri Sparks, who raised him; his sister, Donna Stewart; and his brother, Terry Dawson.

Ed was a coal miner for 29 years, a member of the UMWA for 56 years, and worked as a welder in the shipyards in New Port News Virginia He was also the owner of Ed’s Archery and Shooting Range, and a member of First Assembly of God for 36 years. Ed was a perfectionist at whatever hobby or task he performed; He was a great carpenter and even built his own home. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and 4 wheeling, and boxing, and was a trainer for the Golden Gloves. He was an archer and taught archery classes, won second place in the world championship archery tournament, and won first place in many state archery tournaments. He was a survivor of Buffalo Creek Disaster, where 125 people lost their lives. He was a great worker and provider for his family. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
