Edward Gray Stevens

Mr. Edward Gray Stevens, 85, of 191 McBride Road, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday evening, August 2, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Stevens was born September 5, 1928, in Surry County, one of four children born to the late John Edward and Annie Irene Short Stevens. Edward served our country in the United States Army and the United States Army Reserves, retiring with 35 years of service. He was a proud member of the Claude E. Hooker VFW Post 2019 in Mount Airy. Mr. Stevens worked for The Mount Airy News for many years and later retired from the Winston-Salem Journal. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Marie Lewis Stevens of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Teresa Marshall and her special friend, Mike Blevins, and Donna and Doug Phillips, all of Mount Airy; a son, Michael Gray Stevens of Dobson; five grandchildren, Jeri Marie Marshall, Jason Wayne Marshall, Jacob Stevens, Austin Stevens, and Jenna Brooke Phillips; two stepgrandchildren, Michelle Phillips and Cortney Phillips; and two sisters, Vernell Stevens of Pilot Mountain and Claudia Hicks of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Ann Stevens. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Marty Reece officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
