Mr. Edward Carroll Wagoner, 86, of 479 White Road, Elkin, passed away peacefully on Tuesday night, March 27, 2012, at his home. Mr. Wagoner was born September 11, 1925, in Surry County, the son of the late Robert Benton Wagoner, Sr. and Clara Jane Watts Wagoner. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1942. Carroll enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943, serving aboard USS Paul G. Baker in World War II. He was included in the second Triad Flight of Honor in October 2009. Wagoner joined Quality Mills in 1958 when he became head of the dye and bleach department. He later became manager of the Quality Mills Cloth Plant on Riverside Drive. After his tenure with Quality Mills, Carroll joined Renfro Corporation, where he retired seven years later. Mr. Wagoner was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, the VFW Post 2019 of Mount Airy, the Mount Airy Kiwanis Club, the Mount Airy Lions Club, the Mount Airy Elks Lodge, a commissioner with Boy Scouts of America Commissioner, and a charter member of Cross Creek Country Club. Mr. Wagoner enjoyed the beach, fishing, golf, and hunting. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Foye Chappell Wagoner of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Eddie Johnson of Elkin and Harriett and Ed Childress of Pinnacle; five grandchildren and their spouses, Trevar and Sherry Johnson, Tracy and Lisa Johnson, and Shera and Rodney Holder, all of Dobson, Corey Berrier and his fiancé, Elyse Archer, of Raleigh, and Josh Berrier of Winston-Salem; seven great-grandchildren, Bailey, Clara, Brody, and Thomas Johnson and Cassie, Ella, and Andree Holder; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Willie Ruth and Bobby Dollyhigh and Louise and the Rev. Deward Scott, all of Mount Airy; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Verna Lee Wagoner and Bill and Carolyn Wagoner, all of Mount Airy; many loving nieces and nephews; a special aunt, Myrtle Wagoner of Mount Airy; and a devoted Yorkie dog, "Scrapper." In addition to his parents, Mr. Wagoner was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Benton Wagoner, Jr. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 30, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Deward Scott officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the conclusion of the service by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for their kindness and helpful guidance during Mr. Wagoner's home care.
