Egbert Donald Jones

Egbert “Ed” Donald Jones, of 808 Chancy Lane, Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at his home, with his wife, Millie, by his side.  Ed was born March 2, 1933, in Mount Airy, to the late Egbert Hester and Lila Scott Jones.  He is survived by his wife, Mildred “Millie” Jones of the home.  Also surviving are a special niece, Sonya Tiller and her husband, Kyle, of Tyler, Texas, and their children, Dillon, Heather and Holly and their spouses and children; and a special nephew, Craig Jones of Tyler, Texas, and his son, Josh.  Other very special survivors include his sisters-in-law, Esther Jackson and Virginia Goad of Mount Airy; and many nieces and nephews of Millie’s, whom he dearly loved and the special times they spent together.  Ed was preceded in death by a sister, Faye; and a brother, Tom, and his wife Mary; and a niece, GiGi Nash of Chandler, Texas.  Already a member of the Army National Guard, immediately upon graduation from Mount Airy High School, Ed entered the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and served a tour of duty in Kunson, South Korea.  This experience had a tremendous impact on his life thereafter and one he never forgot.  Upon discharge from the United States Army, he returned to Mount Airy, attended Appalachian State College, then moved to Los Angeles and attended Los Angeles State College, then was employed by Union Pacific Railroad in San Francisco.   Ed returned to Mount Airy in the early 60s and was employed by the Reeves Community Center YMCA as manager of the Y’s Bowling Lanes, the Men and Women’s Softball Teams, and their Little League Baseball Teams.  It was during this time that he met Millie, and they were soon married and shortly thereafter moved to Winston-Salem, and he became employed by Roadway Express in Kernersville until his early retirement in 1991.  Ed and Millie were married for almost 60 years.  The funeral service will be held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy on Monday, June 10, 2024, at 11:00 AM, with Dr. Rick Speas, Senior Pastor at Old Town Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, officiating.   Entombment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard.  The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 AM until the time for the service at the funeral home.  Bayada Home Health Care assisted in Ed’s care during his final year of life with special recognition given to Ebony Byrd and Oneka Jackson.
