Ethel Alline Callaway Smith

Mrs. Ethel Alline Callaway Smith, 97, of Lowgap, passed away Wednesday evening, August 23, 2023, at her home.  Mrs. Smith was born October 16, 1925, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Thomas Daniel and Laura Faulkner Callaway.  She is survived by three sons and four daughters-in-law, Robert “Bobby” and Treva Smith, James “Jimmy” and Teresa Smith, Thomas “Tommy” and Judy Smith, and Annette Smith; five grandchildren and their spouses, Rachel and Juan Escobar, Sarah and Adam Southard, Amanda Smith, Logan and Jenny Smith, and Ethan and Tara Tolbert; five special great-grandchildren, Anna Escobar, Ernest Escobar, Robert Escobar, Malachi Southard, and Aeve Tolbert; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Edgar Smith, Sr.; a son, Daniel Wayne “Danny” Smith; and eight brothers and sisters.  The funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Ivy Green Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert McCrary and Dr. Dan Merritt officiating.  Mrs. Smith will Lie-in-State 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends Monday, August 28, 2023, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.  Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Ivy Green Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 208 Dan Callaway Road, Lowgap NC  27024.  The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the wonderful staff and nurses at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and the people of the community for all the prayers and support throughout Mrs. Smith’s sickness.
