Mrs. Ethel Cook Flippin, 102, of Pulaski, VA, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, devoted teacher, and faithful friend, died Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Kroontje Center, Warm Hearth Village, in Blacksburg, VA. Mrs. Flippin was born June 22, 1909, in Surry County, NC, the daughter of Caleb Franklin and Ida Elizabeth Haymore Cook. She was preceded in death by her husband, P.G. Flippin; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Flippin and Kate F. Wilson; and her siblings, Percy Hundley, Kate Key, Foy Smith, Dillard Cook, and Joe Cook. She is survived by her son, G. Franklin Flippin and his wife, Sarah Copenhaver, of Roanoke, VA; Frank's daughter, Sally F. Godsey and her husband, Blair, also of Roanoke, and son Collins Flippin of Portland, OR; and her daughter, Margaret Sue and her husband, Dr. Jim Shuler, of Blacksburg, VA, their daughter Laurel S. Moore and her husband, Declan, and daughters, Mallory and Gillian Moore, of Washington, DC, and by their son and his wife, Drs. Marshall Shuler and Natasha Hussain and their children, daughter Zahara and son Ali of Baltimore, MD. She is also survived by Kate's daughter, Beth Wilson, and her son, Parker Lusk, of Martinsville, VA; Kate's son, Ben Wilson and his wife, Hilary, and daughters, Chandler and Kendal of Winston-Salem, NC; many beloved nieces and nephews; and a long-term caregiver and friend, Melissa Jude of Giles County, VA. Ethel was a 1927 graduate of Mount Airy High School, received a junior college diploma from Mitchell College, Class of 1929, and a B.S. in education from Radford College in 1958. She began her teaching career in Flat Rock, NC, and, after moving to Pulaski, VA, in 1948, taught first and second grades at Northwood School in Pulaski for 31 years, loving and being loved by hundreds of school children. She was gifted as a teacher and joyfully shared her love of reading, writing, art, and music with all the children who came under her care. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Pulaski, VA, where she taught the adult women's Euzelian Sunday School Class for nearly fifty years, was a faithful circle member, and also served as a trustee. A graveside service will be held Monday, April 2, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy, NC, with The Rev. Dr. Robert T. Copenhaver officiating. There will not be a formal visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy, NC, is serving the family.
