Mr. Gail Lyman Spane, Jr., 66, of Mount Airy, passed away early Wednesday morning, February 11, 2015, at his home. Mr. Spane was born November 16, 1948, in Surry County, one of three children born to Gail Lyman Spane, Sr. and Helen Hines Spane. Gail served our country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. He was the power plant operator at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Tobaccoville for many years and was a member of Grace Moravian Church. Gail was very gifted as an artist and painter. He volunteered countless hours as a painter at The Gallery Group, a school, a refuge, a place of healing, and a cultural hub for the special needs community in the local area and was a member of The Triad Outdoor Painters. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sue Goins Spane of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa Spane and John Foster of Winston-Salem and Candace and William Hazelwood, Sr. of Mount Airy; a son, Alex Spane of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Max Foster and Sam Foster, both of Winston-Salem, and William Hazelwood, Jr. and Isabelle Hazelwood, both of Mount Airy; his mother, Helen Hines Spane of Mount Airy; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Gary Kniskern of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, John and April Spane of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Spane was preceded in death by his father, Gail Lyman Spane, Sr. The funeral service will be held Friday, February 13, 2015, at 3:00 PM at Grace Moravian Church, with the Rev. Jennie Leake Hemrick officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, with a flag presentation by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at the church. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
