Gerald "Jerry" Nowlin

Jerry Nowlin, 69, of Siloam, NC passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, July 20, 2025. Born on May 28, 1956, in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, Jerry was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. .

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Evelyn Nowlin, and his sister, Suzanne Simmons. He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Sandi Nowlin; his sons, Matthew Nowlin (Kim) of Charleston and Jarrod Nowlin (Andrea) of Mount Airy; and his beloved grandchildren, Brody Nowlin, Brooklyn Nowlin, Madison Kirkman, Branson Kirkman, and Tyson Nowlin. He is also survived by his brothers, David Barbour and Mark Barbour; sister-in-law, Michelle Keenan (Tracy) of Siloam; his uncle, Ken Nowlin (Barbara) of Mount Airy; and many cousins and extended family throughout the area.

Jerry graduated from North Surry High School in 1974 and went on to attend Surry Community College. He met the love of his life, Sandi, and they married on October 27, 1979. As their family grew, so did Jerry’s devotion—he worked hard and was always there for his loved ones. He spent over 30 years at Weyerhaeuser, where he was known for his dedication, reliability, and strong work ethic.

He had many passions—sports, fishing, and working in the garden. A die-hard NC State fan, Jerry never missed a chance to root for the Wolfpack, even when his boys cheered for Duke or the Tar Heels. He was a proud Steelers fan and treasured his first NFL game in Pittsburgh with his sons. And he never stopped believing in his Cubbies—he proudly flew that W flag after every win. Fishing was Jerry’s true escape. Whether wading in a river or casting into the ocean, he was happiest with a rod and reel in hand. He had a fishing buddy in nearly every town and looked forward to his annual fishing trips. Jerry also had a green thumb and found joy in tending to his garden. He especially loved growing roses and fresh vegetables, always proud to share what he grew with family and friends.

From playing catch with his boys to cheering on his grandkids, Papaw never missed a chance to be there. He went from dance recitals to baseball and basketball games—always showing up with a smile and support. Even through chemo, he did his best to be present. He couldn’t always stay long, but just seeing Papaw there meant everything.

Through even his hardest days, Papaw showed what it meant to love deeply and be present for the people who mattered most. His steady presence, warm heart, and quiet strength will be missed more than words can say. Jerry was a man of faith who trusted in God through every season of life. His family finds peace in knowing that he is now healed and whole in the presence of his Savior.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 12:30 p.m., followed by a service to celebrate Jerry’s life at 2:00 p.m. Both will take place at Calvary Baptist Church 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030 with Rev.
