Mr. Harry Richard "Dick" Younger, 65, of Mount Airy, died Tuesday afternoon, September 9, 2014, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, after a long illness. Mr. Younger was born May 21, 1949, in Surry County, to Randolph Richard and Pauline Atkins Younger. Dick was a graduate of North Surry High School, where he played on two state basketball championship teams in 1966 and 1967. After graduating from North Carolina State University in 1971, he spent his professional career in the textile industry, primarily with Cross Creek Apparel and its successor companies. After his retirement from Fruit of the Loom, he received a Master of Science degree in accounting from Gardner-Webb University and practiced briefly as a CPA. He was a member of Grace Moravian Church and a member and former president of Yokefellow Cooperative Ministry of Mount Airy. Dick was a devoted husband and dedicated to his family and friends. He was an avid golfer, a sport in which he was quite proficient and was a longtime member of Cross Creek Country Club. He had a marvelous sense of humor, exhibited by his contagious laughter. Mr. Younger was preceded in death by his father, Randolph Richard Younger; and a brother, Benny Dale Younger. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joyce Samuel Younger; his mother, Pauline Atkins Younger of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law, Joe Samuel (Lisa) of Linville, formerly of Wilkesboro; a nephew, Jordan Samuel (Brittany) of Apex; a niece, Leigh Samuel Blaylock (Wes) of Raleigh; a great-niece, Natalie Samuel of Apex; along with a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins. A memorial service will be held Friday September 12, 2014, at 3:00 PM at Grace Moravian Church in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Jennie Leake Hemrick officiating. The Younger family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at the church. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for the loving care provided to Dick for the last several weeks. The family requests no flowers and memorials be made to Yokefellow Cooperative Ministry, P.O. Box 211, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
