Mrs. Hazel Smith Burkhart, age 88 of Pinnacle, passed away on Monday, January 19, 2026, at Novant Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Burkhart was born on February 8, 1937, in Patrick County, Virginia to the late Thomas Auburn and Bettie Mae Anderson Smith and later graduated from Meadows of Dan High School. Hazel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. From a very early age, Hazel placed her faith in God and had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She was very involved in her church as a youth worker, Sunday School teacher and a choir member. Hazel was a hardworking woman who enjoyed gardening, quilting and sewing (especially designing and making dresses for her three girls as well as giving quilts to family members.) After retiring from Renfro Hosiery Mill, she pursued CNA certification because of her passion to help people. As a member of Westfield Baptist Church, she often played her harmonica with other instrumentalists, another passion of hers. Hazel and her husband Barney enjoyed cross-country trips and camping. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry Burkhart Lowe (Allan), Rhonda Burkhart Hooker, Patsy Burkhart Chesnut (David); six grandchildren, Tonya Rippey (Cody), Bradley Easter (Emily), Alison Hooker, Katie Hooker, Kyle Hamlin (Madison), Chloe Guevara (Daniel); three step grandchildren, Wayne Lowe (Lisa), Chris Lowe, Josh Chesnut (Jamie); three great grandchildren; one brother Winford Smith (Cenna); along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burkhart was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Barney W. Burkhart; a son-in-law, Tony Hooker; two sisters, Iris Smith Horton, Mildred Smith Caffacos; and four brothers, Lindsay “Clyde” Smith, Buford Smith, Cecil Smith, and Vance Smith, Sr. A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with Mr. David Chesnut and Mr. Grant Overby officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. The entombment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy has been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Stokes Meals on Wheels, run by Stokes County Senior Services, 700 Main St., Danbury, NC 27016
