Ms. Helen Marie Smith Norman, 77, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2026. Ms. Norman was born March 21, 1949, in Patrick County, VA, the daughter of the late Joe Lee and Effie Hawks Smith. A determined and compassionate woman, Helen pursued her nursing education later in life, earning her credentials as a registered nurse. She dedicated 17 years of service to The Nursing Center at Oak Summit in Winston-Salem, where she worked as a charge nurse and was respected for her skill, leadership, and caring spirit. Helen was a member of Fancy Gap Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was also a gifted and creative person who found joy in painting, crocheting, canning, and baking. Her handmade creations, delicious treats, and generous heart were treasured by family and friends alike. Whether caring for others professionally or expressing her love through her many talents, Helen touched countless lives with her kindness and devotion. She is survived by three daughters, Dee Anne Jones (Brian Warren), Rebecca Hall (Tony), and Karen Reynolds (Jamie); seven grandchildren, Terry Lee Goins, Ashley Kiger (Adam), Kimber Overby (Jared), Elizabeth Hawks, Sarah Morgan (Richard), Frankie Gee (Taylor), and Dixie Jones; thirteen great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Roy Smith; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ms. Norman was preceded in death by two sisters, Yvonne Mabe and Martha Wright; and three brothers, Buford Smith, Claude Smith, and Willie Smith. The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Anthony Thomas officiating. At the conclusion of the service, the North Carolina Nurse Honor Guard of the Piedmont will present a special “Nightingale Tribute” in recognition of Helen’s dedicated nursing career. Burial will follow in the Willis Gap Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:30 to 2:00 PM at the funeral home. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the love, care, and compassion shown by the staff of Mount Airy Dialysis Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Airy Dialysis Center, 1280 Newsome Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Please write “Memorial for Patient Fund” on the memo line of your check.
