Mr. Henry Harrison Miller, 79, of 155 Gwynwood Drive, Mount Airy, passed away early Monday morning, June 16, 2014, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Miller was born January 25, 1935, in Ashe County, the son of the late Reuben and Chessie Graham Miller. Henry graduated in 1953 from Elk Land High School in Todd. Following his high school graduation, he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He later earned two Bachelor of Science degrees from Appalachian State University. Henry was a longtime resident of Mount Airy and a teacher for 30 years, retiring in 1994 from North Surry High School. He was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dawn Cockerham Miller of the home; a daughter, Lisa Dawn Miller of Rural Hall; a son, Henry Ronald Miller of Winston-Salem; a stepson, Tom Gambill of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Dustin Joseph Miller and Max Hayden Inman, both of Mount Airy, and Brooke Leigh Gambill of Beaufort, SC; and a brother and sister-in-law, R.Z. and Kathy Miller of Montgomery, AL. In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was preceded in death by four sisters, Jean Jones, Margaret Miller, Alice Nichols Gilley, and Billie Nichols Hodges; and three brothers, Winston Miller, J.D. Miller, and Max Miller. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 19, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Robert McCrary officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Tom Gambill, 627 Allred Mill Road, Mount Airy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Carol Casstevens and Tina Leonard, and the staff at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017; or the Haymore Memorial Baptist Church Renovation Fund, P.O. Box 27, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
