To those who knew and loved him, Herbert A. Mason was so much more than the things he accomplished. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend – a strong-willed man with a generous heart, a good sense of humor, and a knack for making people feel welcome. He worked hard, loved deeply, and found joy in family, friendships, golf, and, later in life, sharing flowers with anyone who happened to cross his path.
Herbert was the father of six children, grandfather of 17, and great-grandfather of 14. He was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings; his beloved wife, Mae; his son, Jay; and his granddaughter, Allana Mae.
A close friend introduced Herbert to Mae, who became the love of his life. They were married for 62 years and 8 days and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Washington, D.C. Temple. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and hard work.
He served for three years in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne Division and was a Golden Gloves boxer, reflecting the courage and competitive spirit that characterized much of his life.
In 1978, Herbert moved from Rhode Island to North Carolina with Mae to join her sister, Rita, and brother-in-law, Bill Hiatt, in starting a business. With very little, the four of them built a rebar company from the ground up, eventually helping construct bridges throughout the South. Their determination turned a small beginning into a successful family business.
Herbert treasured his friendships, particularly those he made through his love of golf. He enjoyed the game, but even more, he enjoyed the time spent with his friends at the club.
In his later years, Herbert became known around town as “the flower man.” He grew beautiful zinnias, which you could see in shops throughout the town, and he loved giving them away. On occasion, even the local trolley would stop so Herbert could share flowers with its passengers. It was a simple gesture that reflected his generosity and his enjoyment of bringing happiness to others.
Herbert will be remembered for his strength, humor, generosity, and devotion to those he loved. He leaves behind a family, friendships, and memories that will carry his spirit forward for generations.
