Irene Brown McCann, age 89, of Pennybyrn, High Point, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Hospice of the Piedmont. Born in Patrick County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William Hubbard and Elizabeth P. Smith Brown. Mrs. McCann was a graduate of Blue Ridge High School, and Radford College. She received her master’s degree in guidance and counseling at UNC-Charlotte. Mrs. McCann resided in Salisbury for more than 34 years, after residing in Mooresville, N.C., Greensboro, N.C., and Ararat, Virginia. She was a retired guidance counselor in education. She taught at Sternberger Elementary School in Greensboro, N.C, and North Rowan Junior High School. She was teacher of the year at Cleveland Elementary and was a guidance counselor at Boston Elementary School. She had memberships in N.C. Guidance and Counseling Association, North Carolina Association of Educators, Delta Kappa Gamma Society Internation, Epsilon Chapter, Phi Mu Social Fraternity, and a lifetime member of North Carolina cogress of Parents and Teachers. Mrs. McCann was a member of Neel Road Baptist Church for more than thirty years. She served in various capacities in the church. Some of these positions were as follows: Chairperson of the Ladies’ Sunday School Class, and Chairperson of the Nominating Committee, member of the Church Choir and a member of various other Church Committees. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tamara Mullen and Michael; grandchildren, Kyle Mullen and Kevin Mullen; sister and brother-in-law, Ilene and Marvin East; brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Libby Brown; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. McCann was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joseph F. McCann; sister, Virginia Quillen; brothers, Thomas Brown, John Brown, and William Brown, Jr. A graveside service to honor Mrs. McCann’s life will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 2:00 PM until 2:45 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pennybyrn Retirement Home 109 Penny Road, High Point, NC 27260. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
