James "Jimi" Randolph Mitchell, Jr

James Randolph Mitchell Jr. (“Jimi”), 78, of Stuart, Virginia, passed away on August 2, 2026, at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection. Jimi lived a life rooted in love, creativity, and quiet strength. He shared 60 devoted years with his wife, Mary Lee Whitten, and together they built a home filled with laughter, hard work, and deep family pride.

He was a devoted father to Matthew Whitten Mitchell, a loving grandfather to Karathena Fallon, Genevieve Skye, Clariti Alei, and Maisley Grace, and a proud great‑grandfather to Kolten McCoy Preston. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Lindsey, and his parents, Sue Hylton Mitchell and Randolph Mitchell. Family meant everything to him, and he carried that devotion into every part of his life.

A lifelong educator, Jimi spent his career teaching art to elementary students, bringing joy and imagination into the classroom. His humor, patience, and ability to make every child feel seen became the legacy he was most proud of. He earned degrees in Art Education from Radford University and East Carolina University, and he poured his heart into the work he loved.

Jimi and Mary Lee spent eight summers running M&J Riding Stables at Fairystone State Park, forming friendships and memories that lasted decades. After retiring, they embraced a new adventure and spent twelve years living in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, where they enjoyed the beauty, culture, and pace of life that suited their adventurous spirits. Their farm in Stuart, which they’ve owned since Jimi graduated in 1970, remained one of his greatest joys.

Jimi will be missed by all those who knew him. Living a full, adventurous life, he had a special manner of accepting life’s trials and blessings. His gentle spirit, creativity, and quiet resilience touched everyone around him.
