Mr. James Vester Overby, 87, of Lawsonville, passed away Sunday morning, November 10, 2024, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Overby was born July 12, 1937, in Stokes County, one of six children born to the late Dewey and Betsy Martin Overby. In his early adult life, Vester, known simply as “Vess” to those who had the privilege of knowing him, worked at a local factory in Stoneville before beginning a long and dedicated career with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. As a truck driver for the state, he became a familiar figure on the roads, known for his reliability and strong work ethic. After retiring from the DOT, Vess found a second calling in maintenance at Hanging Rock State Park. For several years, he worked quietly behind the scenes, helping to preserve the park’s natural beauty for visitors and future generations. His love for the outdoors was evident in every aspect of his work, and he cherished the peaceful moments he spent in the woods and along the trails he helped to care for. Vess led a life that was defined by simplicity, solitude, and a deep love for the natural world. Never one for the spotlight, he spent much of his life in the quiet seclusion of his small farmhouse, tending to his garden, bush hogging, and chopping wood. He is survived by a daughter, Mickie Overby Powell; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Overby was preceded in death by two sisters, Jessie Mae Overby and Mozelle Owens; and three brothers, Lester Overby, Clarence Overby, and Russell Overby. A graveside service will be held Thursday, November 14, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Aarons Corner Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Andy Pack officiating. No formal visitation will be held. In his passing, we remember Vess not for the accolades he may never have received, but for the quiet ways in which he made the world a better place – by living with integrity, showing kindness without fanfare, and seeking comfort in the simple joys of life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
