Mr. James Daniel Shinault, 89, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, October 9, 2025, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Shinault was born July 12, 1936, in Surry County, one of ten children born to the late Ben and Vader Poindexter Shinault. James grew up on a tobacco farm in the Level Cross community and attended Copeland School. He later worked at North Carolina Foam Industries for many years and was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Vicky and Dennis Lamoureux; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Norma Wactor; his grandchildren, Christopher and Sarah Bowman, Adam and Hailey Bowman, and Kristy and Wesley King; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilbur Shinault, Wayne and Beulah Shinault, and Alma Shinault; a brother-in-law, Vernon Turner; many nieces and nephews; and his special furry friend, Dunkin. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shinault was preceded in death by his wife, Ruthie Jacqueline “Jackie” Draughn Shinault; four sisters, Alene Shinault, Gladys Hawks, Gloria Thornes, and Frankie Turner; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilson and Katherine Shinault, Tom and June Shinault, Bobby Shinault, and Janet Shinault. The funeral service will be held Monday, October 13, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Little Mountain Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Watson and the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church. At other times, the family welcomes friends to the home of Richard and Norma Wactor at 637 Old Creed Road, Mount Airy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love, care, and compassion shown by Dr. Randall S. Keith and his staff and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
