Mr. James “Jimmy” Eugene Slate, age 74 of Mount Airy passed away on Monday, May 2, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Slate was born on June 24, 1947, in Surry County to the late Jim and Ever Culler Slate. Jimmy proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a faithful member of Bear Trail Baptist Church. Before his illness, Jimmy could be found on Main Street playing checkers and impersonating “Otis” from the Andy Griffith Show. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 51 years, Glenda Dowell Slate; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy Slate Hunt and Donny; Hallie Slate Crotts and Pastor Timmy Crotts; a son and daughter-in-law, Dusty Slate and Sheena; grandchildren, Kendra Crotts Karpenko, Kristin Crotts Bullin and Jeremy, Jessie Reynolds and Alexis, Samantha Slate Turner and Jesse, Bryson Slate, Macy Slate, Angel; great-grandchildren, Ryan Karpenko, Emma Karpenko, Caleb Bullin, Gracie Bullin, Serenity Reynolds, and one on the way; and two sisters and brother-in-law, Linda Beasley, Lois Flippin and Junior. In addition to his parents, Mr. Slate was preceded in death by a brother, Ricky Slate and a niece Amanda Beasley. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Bear Trail Baptist Church in Cana, Virginia with Pastor Timmy Crotts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at Bear Trail Baptist Church in Cana, Virginia from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The family would like to thank Wake Forest Baptist Cancer Center and VA Medical Center for their care of Mr. Slate during his illness. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
