Mrs. Jean Carol Blevins Atkins, age 93 passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation in Mount Airy. Jean was proceeded in death by husband Charles D. Atkins, her parents - George Blevins and Grace, and two brothers - Bruce Blevins and John (Jack Blevins).
She was survived by four sons Dwight (Janice) of Pilot Mountain, NC, Steve (Robyn) of Punta Gorda, Florida, Mark (Barbara) of Folly Beach, South Carolina, and David (Susan) of Winston Salem; seven grandchildren – Blake (Megan), Erich, Erika, Jake, Nick, Caroline (Josh), Maliyah; and several nieces and nephews.
Jean graduated from Lees McRae College where she met her husband and earned a degree and received training in medical library science. She was employed for many years at Surry Community College as an instructor in the business department. Jean loved her life in Mount Airy where she and Charlie raised their four sons. Jean enjoyed serving her community through her volunteer work as docent at the Mount Airy Museum of Local History and at Northern Surry Hospital. Jean was a member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy where she was an active member of the Rebekah Sunday School class.
Her family and friends were always grateful for her wisdom, generosity, positive attitude, and support. Above all things, Jean was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was well known for her generosity and kindness. Her wit and humor were infectious. She told great stories, loved to entertain, and was an enthusiastic bridge player. Jean was an avid reader and loved to talk about books, movies, current events, history, and her faith.
Jean Atkins will be dearly missed, but her legacy of love, selflessness, and thoughtfulness will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
A private graveside will be held at Oakdale Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held July, 8, 2023 at 2:00 with visitation from 1:00 - 2:00 at First Baptist Church in Mount Airy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History,301 North Main Street, Mount Airy, North Carolina 27030.
