Jeannie Lynnette Young

Miss Jeannie Lynnette Young, 65, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

Miss Young was born October 9, 1960, in Surry County, the younger of two daughters born to the late Wiley Leonard “Dick” and Mary Etta Steele Young. Lynnette was a 1978 graduate of Mount Airy Senior High School and continued her education at Surry Community College, where she earned an Associate in Applied Science degree in 1980. In 2001, she graduated from Gardner-Webb University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Administration.

Lynnette dedicated more than four decades of her life to the healthcare field. She began her career in 1980 with Northern Hospital of Surry County, where she worked in a variety of roles, including medical records data analyst, transcriptionist, data analyst and coder, birth and death registrar, and tumor registrar for the hospital’s Cancer Committee. She also designed health information management software, developed training manuals, and prepared monthly reports of hospital services for presentation to the Board of Trustees.

In 1995, Lynnette joined Novant Health Medical Group, where she worked in medical records and served as clinic administrator at Surry Medical Associates until 2001. She then became a clinic educator and manager of clinical support with Novant Health Medical Group’s Central Clinical Operations, a position she held until her retirement in November 2025.

Her passion for education extended beyond her healthcare career. From 2001 to 2002, she was a part-time instructor in the Continuing Education Division of Surry Community College, where she taught ICD-9-CM and CPT coding and HIPAA regulations and compliance. From 2007 until 2021, she also served as personal assistant to actress Betty Lynn, who was best known for her role as Thelma Lou on The Andy Griffith Show.

Miss Young was a longtime and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Mount Airy. For 15 years, she served as director of the children’s department and taught Sunday school to children in grades one through six for 30 years. Her love for children and commitment to teaching made a lasting impact on generations of young people in her church.

She is survived by two nephews, Joshua Henderson Martin (Candice) and Jeffery Leonard Martin (Meredith Leas); a great-niece, Hailey Nicole Martin; and a great-step-nephew, Aiden Hocken.

In addition to her parents, Miss Young was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Ann and Gregg Henderson Martin.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Skyline Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Tony Goins officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
