Mrs. Joan Marie Parker Spurlin, 70, of Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2011, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Spurlin was born July 13, 1940, in New York City, daughter of the late Frank H. and Cynthia Clark Wherry Parker. She was retired from the Surry County Schools after teaching at White Plains Elementary School for 32 years. Mrs. Spurlin was a devoted member of Highland Park Baptist Church, where she served as music director for many years and was very active in all aspects of the church ministry. She loved everyone she came into contact with and never met a stranger. She is survived by her husband, John C. Spurlin, Jr. of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kini and Mitch Snow of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jonathan Corey and Fran Spurlin of Salisbury and Michael Brandon and Sherri Spurlin of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, Caleb and Laura Spurlin, Cody Spurlin and Brandi Draughn, Brittany and Josh Hawks, Ethan Edwards, and Mally Snow; two great-grandchildren, Kali Hawks and Maggie Hawks; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Wendy and Oley Parker and Steve and Vangie Parker, all of China Grove, and Dale and Sharon Parker of Virginia Beach, VA; numerous beloved nieces and nephews; and many special friends. The funeral service will be held Sunday, May 29, 2011, at 4:00 PM at Highland Park Baptist Church, with the Rev. Darrell Tate officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00 PM at Highland Park Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Highland Park Baptist Church International Mission Fund, 1327 Grove Lane, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
