Mr. Joe Walter Bryant, 77, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Bryant was born April 17, 1937, in Surry County, to the late Walter Marion and Addie Smith Bryant. Joe served our country in the United States Army from 1965 until 1966. He retired as the owner and operator of Oak Grove Market after working at Parrish Tire with 25 years of service. Mr. Bryant was faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Board of Trustees. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, JoAnn Coalson Bryant of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Mike Stanley of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Lisa Bryant of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Justin Bryant, William Bryant, Brent Woods, and Trent Stanley; a sister, Alice Bowman of Mount Airy; and a sister-in-law, Sadie Bryant of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Tim Woods; a sister, Frances Bryant; two brothers, Porter Bryant and Weldon Bryant; a half-brother, James Aaron Brintle. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Oak Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alton Bledsoe and the Rev. Grover Holder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017; or Oak Grove Baptist Church, 272 Oak Grove Church Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
