Mr. John Franklin Smith, Sr., 84, of Ararat, VA, passed away Friday morning, October 25, 2019, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Dobson, after several months of declining health. Mr. Smith was born August 9, 1935, in Patrick County, VA, the son of the late Charlie Winchester and Eunice Barnard Smith. John retired as a salesman from Foothill Ford and was a member of Freedom and Liberty Worship Center in Pilot Mountain. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Catherine Goins Smith of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Anna Smith of Dobson and John Franklin Smith, Jr. and Julie Smith of Lambsburg, VA; his grandchildren, Rebekah and Brent Boggs of Winston-Salem, Sarah and Lucas Tate of Mount Airy, and Hannah and Joseph Cardwell of Lambsburg, VA; two great-grandchildren, Amelia Tate of Mount Airy and Asher Boggs of Winston-Salem; and a great-grandchild on-the-way, Niles Tate, due November, 2019. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by several siblings. No formal visitation or memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is serving the family.
