Born August 24, 1949, in Surry County, to the late Grover Watson Hanes Jr. and the late Mary Ruth Calloway Hanes. Johnny graduated from Surry Central High School, and Catawba College. He then attended and graduated from Gardner Webb University with his master’s degree. Johnny is remembered as a caring teacher of 31 years with Surry County Schools. He encouraged his students to believe in themselves and nurtured their love of learning through his vast subject knowledge. Johnny was a lifelong member of Mountain Park Baptist Church, where he got married and was a faithful servant to the church where he taught Sunday school and served as deacon for many years, as his health permitted. Johnny's favorite hobbies were playing music and restoring antique cars. He played several instruments including dobro, banjo, and guitar. Johnny's masterful dobro playing is featured on many recordings including South Fork Band.
