Julia Hall On April 12, just a few days after her 93rd birthday, Julia Draper Hunnicutt Hall died, leaving behind an abundance of people who are forever changed by her loving and cheerful presence in their lives. Julia is predeceased by her parents, William Emory Hunnicutt and Mary Barnes Yancey Hunnicutt, her husband, Dr. James Grayson Hall, and son, James Grayson Hall, Jr. Julia was born on April 4, 1933, in a farmhouse in Franklin, North Carolina. She graduated from high school in Franklin before attending Women's College and Greensboro College. In 1954, she left college to marry Gray Hall, who became a flight surgeon in the Navy, before starting his medical practice in Dobson, North Carolina. Most of the rest of her life was spent in Dobson, where she thrived in a small community, living an ordinary life in the most extraordinary way. She and her family were members of the United Methodist Church, she assisted in Gray's medical practice and she was a wonderful mother to Jim. She loved her dogs and was an avid reader and bridge player. Julia was an exceptional cook and made a comfortable home on their farm for Gray, Jim and later for their nephew, Jay. Her niece recounts that her chocolate cake recipe became a family favorite that is still requested on birthdays and special occasions. Julia was named for her mother's favorite professor in college. With a start like that, it was no surprise that she had the keen and natural curiosity of an intellectual, always expanding her knowledge in history, philosophy and other places her books took her. Julia was also talented as an artistic craftsperson. She created beaded lamp bulb covers for chandeliers, which became so popular they were even sold in the Biltmore House giftshop. In her high school annual, she chose the quotation, "Always direct your feet to the sunny side of the street". As it turns out, she did just that. Julia is survived by her brothers, William Emory Hunnicutt, Jr., of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Thomas Blacknall Hunnicutt (Nancy), of Burnsville, North Carolina, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service for Julia Hall will be held at the Dobson United Methodist Church in Dobson, North Carolina on May 16 at 1:00 pm. The family will receive visitors directly following the ceremony in the fellowship hall. If you wish to honor Julia's life with a donation, please consider the National Institute of Mental Health or the Dobson United Methodist Church. Moody-Davis Funeral Service in Dobson is respectfully serving the Hall family.
