WEST COLUMBIA, SC – Mrs. Lelia Akers Easter, 96, went to meet her husband of 59 years, Harold Easter, the love of her life, on Sunday, February 28, 2016. Born January 6, 1920, in the Cana section of Carroll County, VA, she was the daughter of Sherman and Emmaline Cagle Akers. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Howard Akers; and four sisters, Lillie Hawks, Bertha Edwards, Annie Hawks, and Stella Hawks. Mrs. Easter is survived by a son, Curtis, and a daughter-in-law, Anita, whom she loved as her daughter, of Lexington, SC; a grandson, Shawn Easter (Suzanne) of Burlington, NC; a granddaughter, Gina Holmes (Ken) of Chapin, SC; and four great-grandchildren, Taylor Easter, Jackson Holmes, Dylan Easter, and Connor Holmes. She was also preceded in death by several nieces and nephews and is survived by many as well. She was especially loved and assisted by her niece, Elza Bowman. Mrs. Easter was a homemaker, worked in the orchard with Harold, and was the cafeteria manager at Saint Paul Elementary School in Cana, VA, for many years. As a charter member of Paul’s Creek Baptist Church, she served in many capacities there. A very loving person and a great cook, she will always be especially remembered for her biscuits, fried apple pies, and chicken and dumplings. Her message for her family and friends as written by her is this: “I have been blessed so much with a wonderful, loving family and so many good friends. Be good and kind to each other and always put your faith and trust in the Lord.” The funeral service will be held Thursday, March 3, 2016, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, NC, with the Reverend Verlon Combs and the Reverend Dr. Larry Long presiding. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Rocky Ford Christian Church Cemetery in Cana, VA. Pallbearers will be Tim Easter, David Easter, Dan Combs, J.D. Bowman, Marlie Hawks, and Haywood Hawks. Memorials may be made in her memory to Joy Ranch, P.O. Box 727, Hillsville, VA 24343. Flowers will also be appreciated. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Ridgecrest Retirement Community in Mount Airy, NC, and National Health Care in West Columbia, SC, for their loving care.
