Mrs. Lena “Madeline” Hodges Young, age 82, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Sunday night, June 8, 2025, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Mrs. Young was born on July 17, 1942, in Surry County, the last surviving child and only daughter of the late John Walter and Maude Bryant Hodges. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Madeline loved to travel to various locations, her favorites being the Blue Ridge Parkway and Dollywood. Additionally, she enjoyed cooking for her loving family; and she was a member of New Charity Baptist Church. Surviving is her husband of 63 years, Richard Murray Young; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen Young Whitt and Arthur; two sons and daughter-in-law, Richard Craig Young and Vicky, Darrell Young and Misti; four grandchildren whom she cherished, Cynthia Young and Simon, Emily Rook and Aaron, Mikaela Whitt and Chase, Stephen Young and Morgan; two great-grandchildren, Addison Wood, Annslee Young; her dear friend, Phyllis Rutherford; along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Young was preceded in death by two special great-grandchildren, and seven brothers, Moyer Hodges, Cecil Hodges, Eugene Hodges, Wayne Hodges, Bobby Hodges, Jimmy Hodges, Ralph Hodges; and her special best friend, Margaret Reece Moncus. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2025, at 2:00 PM at New Charity Baptist Church in Mount Airy with Reverend Hank Robertson, Reverend Rawley “Dink” Haynes officiating and Mr. Stephen Young speaking. Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at New Charity Baptist Church from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy has been entrusted with the arrangements.
